Dr. Daniele Mari

BIOGRAPHY
Daniele Mari was born in Milan in 1961, After a scientific high school degree obtained in Italy Daniele Mari joins EPFL in 1980 and graduates in Physics in 1986. In 1991, he obtains the Ph.D. from the same institution working in the field of metal-ceramic composites. From 1992 to 1993 he continues his research as a post-doc at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology with a work on shape-memory alloys. In 1993, he joins the company Amysa Yverdon SA (Switzerland) as director of Research and Development and creates ACME (Advanced Composite & Microwave Engineering) with activities in the fields of the electromagnetic heating and materials science. In parallel with his industrial activities, D. Mari has supervised different research projects in materials science at the EPFL. He has been lecturer in Physics of Materials from 1999 to 2003. He is now part of the GSM team with research projects in the field of hard materials and steels. Since 2012, he is the director of the Travaux Pratiques et Auditoires de Physique. He manages the experimental support to physics courses at EPFL and the Physics Laboratory Courses available for EPFL and University of Lausanne sections.

RESEARCH

The principal focus of D. Mari activity has been for many years the study of the mechanical properties of Hardmetals. In particular, he investigated their mechanical behaviour at high temperature and the residual stresses using neutron and x-ray diffraction. He has also investigated shape memory alloys developing a new type of composite based on NiTi and TiC. His present research projects concern steels, composite materials and nanocomposite for energy and aerospace applications.
D. Mari publications include 36 refereed papers, 5 patents, 1 book chapter, 1 edited book. He is also referee for several jouranls and science-funding organizations. He will organize the next International Conference on the Science of Hard Materials ICSHM9.

TEACHING
He presently teaches at the Physics Laboratory for students in physics. He is also working as scientific advisor for the development of experiments dedicated to teaching physics at EPFL.
